Director of Parks & Recreation

The Director of Parks and Recreation leads the department’s planning, operations, and programs, ensuring effective management of parks, recreation, and community services across Pierce County. Key responsibilities include capital planning, grant and budget oversight, community engagement, and fostering partnerships to leverage diverse funding sources. As the department’s representative, the Director advocates for parks and recreation services, collaborates with stakeholders, and drives strategic initiatives to meet community needs. Appointed by and serving at the discretion of the County Executive, the Director also participates as a member of the Executive Cabinet.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Deep knowledge of modern management practices, public parks and recreation principles, and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Skilled in budget preparation, cost control, building partnerships, and making sound, independent decisions under pressure.
  • Proficient in strategic thinking, negotiating agreements, and managing diverse teams and resources to meet community needs.
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively, interpret and justify budgets, and engage with diverse stakeholders to promote departmental goals
