BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the general direction of the County Engineer, the Assistant County Engineer provides technical, operational, and administrative support to ensure the effective execution of engineering services. This role focuses on tactical implementation, day-to-day coordination, and problem-solving to support division goals and maintain efficient operations.
PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties as assigned.
1. Division Operations and Technical Oversight – 30%
Manages day-to-day technical operations of the Engineering Division under the direction of the County Engineer.
Coordinates task assignments, monitors workflow, and ensures alignment with established performance expectations.
Provides input and guidance to staff regarding operational challenges, escalating personnel matters and performance issues to the County Engineer for resolution.
2. Project Coordination and Technical Support – 25%
Assists the County Engineer in executing design and construction projects by coordinating schedules, compiling technical data, and monitoring compliance with engineering standards.
Performs technical duties such as drafting, survey coordination, and inspections to support engineering deliverables.
Tracks project milestones and prepares status reports for County Engineer review.
3. External Communication and Stakeholder Support – 20%
Facilitates communication with regulatory agencies, municipalities, utilities, and other partners as delegated by the County Engineer.
Supports public outreach efforts by gathering input and preparing presentations or technical responses for the County Engineer.
Participates in meetings and committees as a technical representative when directed.
4. Regulatory, Contract, and Permit Support – 15%
Compiles and prepares permit applications and documentation for review and submission by the County Engineer.
Assists in preparing draft contracts for professional services and construction projects for the County Engineer’s evaluation and approval.
Supports compliance tracking during design and construction phases by maintaining documentation and coordinating with staff.
5. Strategic Support and Grant Preparation – 10%
Prepares background documentation, data analysis, and draft applications to support the County Engineer in seeking grant funding.
Assists with data collection and project forecasting to inform updates to the County’s 6-Year Transportation Improvement Program.
Provides operational insight and technical support in long-term infrastructure planning efforts led by County Engineer.

· CAD and GIS proficiency
· Public communication skills
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Bachelor’s degree or higher in civil engineering.
· Registered as a Professional Civil Engineer in Washington State.
· A current State of Washington driver’s license.
· Certification as a Washington State Bridge Inspector is highly desirable.
· Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and manage well at all levels of the organization.
· Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
· Proficient in financial software and MS Office Suite.
