Job Description

The Mason County Chief Public Defender serves as a focal point for the overall administration and management of the delivery of public defender services for the County.   Provides financial management, resource utilization, legal compliance and quality assurance, and will advise the County as to matters of public defense policy, litigation, and negotiation of public defender contracts.  The position also will screen, prepare and defend misdemeanor cases in District Court and felony cases in Superior Court, as needed, and will coordinate with the judges the most efficient manner in which to schedule and handle court dockets.

Minimum Qualifications:
Admission to the Bar of the State of Washington.  A minimum of eight years of practice as an attorney with at least three years demonstrated experience and ability handling criminal matters at the felony level is required.  Significant trial and jury trial experience is required.  Demonstrated legal and administrative ability, and a firm commitment to the needs of the indigent accused.  Ability to utilize a personal computer and related software packages to perform word processing, analysis, information retrieval, and tracking.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid Washington State Driver’s License
Member in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
A minimum of three years supervisory experience at a senior management level is preferred.  Demonstrated legal and administrative ability, and a firm commitment to the needs of the indigent accused.
