Job Description

Appraiser Trainee:

Perform field inspections to appraise new and existing residential or commercial structures and land for purposes of establishing a value upon which property taxes will be assessed. Trainee will perform duties under close supervision and direction from the Appraiser IV – Senior Appraiser and/or Assessor. Accumulate, assimilate, and analyze data to determine fair market value. Communicate with the public to explain procedures and answer questions.

Individuals in this position will normally have had no previous experience or their experience or level of capability is unknown. This is an in-training position in the basic appraisal skills, learning specific procedures and practices within the Assessor’s Office. Individual works under the close direction of employees of a higher classification and will be expected to work independently with little detail direction to perform repetitive, well-known, and relatively unskilled tasks. Individuals assigned to this classification shall not be permitted to perform private appraisals nor be involved in any other than personal real estate transactions in accordance with established policy of the Assessor’s Office.

Knowledge of:

Customer service etiquette
Relevant information, including applicable policies, procedures, laws and regulations
Specialized terminology
Software applications; keyboarding skills (may vary according to position assignment)
Appropriate physical standards for computer work such as appropriate seating, arm and/or wrist use
Principles, procedures and technology of real property appraisal
Building codes and restrictions and engineering requirements as related to building components
Washington state law and the revised code of Washington, pertinent federal and local laws, codes and regulations with the ability to interpret and apply them
Basic mathematics principles, ability to use basic math and perform calculations involving decimals and percentages

Education and Experience Required
Requires knowledge of the field of assignment sufficient to perform thoroughly and accurately the full scope of responsibility as illustrated by examples in the above job description

Education/Training
High school graduate or G.E.D.

Experience
Minimum of one year assessment and/or real property appraisal experience, preferred.

Special Requirements
Individuals in the class are required to take the examination to become an Appraiser after one year in position. If individual is not successful in their first attempt to become a certified appraiser, they will be allowed one additional opportunity. If unsuccessful in the second attempt, individual may be demoted to a lesser position within the department or terminated.

Possession of Real Property Assessment Certification or ability to obtain after one year in position

Starting Wage: $20.4352/hr
Full Wage Range: $20.4352- $24.4220/hr
