EQUIPMENT OPERATOR – BELFAIR LOCATION
Description
Equipment Operator is a road maintenance position. Individuals operate a variety of road machinery and perform miscellaneous labor in support of construction, maintenance, or repair of county roads, bridges, drainage systems, traffic or road signs, and engineering projects. Capable of working independently and in a group setting during normal work hours and during callouts. Positions is subject to and expected to be available for call-out 24-7 for emergency response to a variety of road related occurrences.
This position requires a Class A CDL. Applicants are required to submit a Driver’s Abstract from the Department of Licensing for review. WA State Licensing DOL – Request Driving Record

Examples of Duties
Operates graders, brush cutters, backhoes, dozers, loaders, ditching equipment, tractor brooms, and other kinds of road machinery
Operators are required to inspect and maintain their assigned machinery including fluid levels, tire pressure, lights, greasing needs, and tighten bolts, etc.
Performs tasks common to road maintenance work such as: traffic control flagging, operation and minor maintenance of road machinery, lifting and moving signs and barricades, asphalt patching, brush cutting and removal, guardrail or fence repair, jetting of culverts and similar activities, installing and adjusting tire chains.
Other physical labor may include but not be limited to: Tree falling and cutting, cleaning culvert ends by hand, dismantling beaver dams, hand brushing, operating and feeding the chipper, removal of dead animals from the right-of-way, cleaning equipment and trucks, assisting mechanics in the shop, assisting with shop clean-up or inventory, and other labor-intensive jobs.

Performs related work as required
May be required to operate snowplow and sanding trucks during winter storm emergencies
May be assigned the application of deicing during winter operations
May be temporarily assigned to drive a truck and/or to assist Sign Technicians in pavement marking operations, posthole digging and sign placement, and similar activities
May be assigned to the operation of the oil distributors and herbicide operations, applying herbicides to road shoulders, assignment to these operations will be made following appropriate training.
Knowledge of:
Practices and procedures related to road construction or maintenance
Basic mathematics
Ability to:
Establish and maintain effective working relations with coworkers, supervision, and the general public
Operate heavy construction equipment, large trucks, and power tools
Work effectively without direct supervision
Comply with Washington State Motor Vehicle Laws
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED
Two (2) years of experience in road construction or heavy equipment operation
Experience working with survey stakes, blueprints, and specifications is preferred
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Washington State Class A, CDL with endorsement N for tank trailers
First-Aid / CPR Card
Flaggers Card
Maintenance of current skills, good driving record, and additional training as needed
Supplemental Information
This position is represented by Operator Engineers Local 302 in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Teamsters Local No. 252, Operating Engineers Local 302 and Mason County Public Works.
Clothing Allowance: $200.00 paid annually
Sick and Vacation Leave: 96 hours of Vacation for the 1st-3rd years of employment and 96 hours of sick leave
Holidays: 12 Recognized Holidays (if an employee works on a holiday, they will be paid double time plus holiday pay) and 2 annual Floating (personal) Holidays
Pension: Employer paid; the County contributes $2.00 an hour for every hour worked.
Medical: $103.30 a month for employee and qualifying dependents, including a 3 month disability waiver and weekly time loss compensation
Dental and Vision: Employer paid with no additional cost for qualifying dependents
Life / AD&D: Employer paid basic life and AD&D insurance
Longevity: The County provides additional monthly compensation to recognize continuous length of service beginning the 6th year of service
Reimbursement: CDL Physical and CDL Endorsement
