The Mason County Public Works Department is seeking individuals to serve in Extra Help positions. These are temporary roles with a duration of up to five (5) months and are not eligible for benefits, except as required by state and federal law.
Position will assist in one or more divisions of Public Works/Utilities and Waste Management including Survey, Engineering, GIS, Road Construction & Maintenance, Water/Sewer/Solid Waste, Finance and Administrative Support. Duties may vary depending on department needs. The role is ideal for individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in public infrastructure, engineering, and operations.Work is performed under direct supervision; individuals are expected to learn tasks and carry out assignments as instructed.
Essential Functions
(Any one position may not include all the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)
Assignments may vary depending on division needs and weather conditions. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Assist with field surveying operations, equipment handling, and data collection.
Provide assistance with construction site inspections, field documentation, and compliance monitoring.
Assist crews with pavement striping, sign installation, curve analysis, and related tasks.
Clear brush around bridges, signs, intersections, and guardrails.
Perform general maintenance around Public Works facilities, including sweeping, trimming vegetation, painting, vacuuming, and window washing.
Assist with sign washing and visibility checks.
Assist with GIS-related assignments as needed.
Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
Basic construction, road maintenance, or public works operations.
Safety procedures and practices for working around traffic, heavy equipment, and construction zones.
Basic mathematical principles for measurements, data collection, and recordkeeping.
Skill in:
Microsoft Suite.
Customer service.
Ability to:
Perform physical labor in various weather conditions
Work within established guidelines.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, regarding complex or sensitive issues.
Problem solve.
Minimum Qualifications:
(Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job may be considered.)
High School Diploma or GED is required.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Washington State Driver’s License
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Familiarity with Civil 3D or GIS software
Attending College in related fields

Work is performed in an office setting and outdoor field environment. Employees may be required to move up to 40 pounds. Position requires mental acuity to ensure thorough analysis of situations in a fast-paced environment. Employee is required to maintain confidentiality of information within the department. The employee may be required to deal with disgruntled individuals requiring the use of conflict management skills. Employee is frequently required to perform work confidently and under pressure for deadlines and is always required to maintain professional composure and tact, patience, and courtesy.
