Job Description

Provides preventative and corrective maintenance on a wide variety of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment.  Diagnoses mechanical, hydraulic and electrical malfunctions and accomplishes repairs in the shop and field.

This position requires a Class A CDL.  Applicants are required to submit a Driver’s Abstract from the Department of  Licensing for review.

Examples of Duties
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks, which may be found in positions of this class)

Provide routine service and maintenance of county automobiles, trucks and construction equipment, including lubrication, brake inspection and maintenance of other safety related equipment
Troubleshoots and repairs gasoline engines, automatic and manual transmissions and other related equipment utilized on automobiles and light trucks
Troubleshoots and repairs diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems and other related equipment utilized on construction equipment and class 8 trucks
Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment to detect, analyze and repair modern computer-controlled engine, emission and ABS systems
Fabricate and modify parts and equipment utilizing Oxygen/Acetylene and Electric Arc welders and cutters
Perform work in accordance with sound safety practices
Accurately maintain work, time and part records
Assist other mechanics in the diagnosis and repair of county vehicles and equipment
Regular, reliable and punctual attendance
Shows initiative in performing job functions
Performs related work as required

Knowledge of:
Modern automotive repair, including the use of computer diagnostic equipment
Diesel engines, heavy trucks and construction equipment
The operation and repair of hydraulic systems and components utilized on construction equipment
Shop fabrication techniques, including welding and cutting

Ability to:
Read, understand, and effectively apply a variety of technical information in the repair of vehicles and equipment
Communicate and work effectively and professionally with limited supervision
Work as a member of a service-oriented team, including flexible hours as required to support various County operations
Work independently
Operate vehicles, heavy trucks and construction equipment for the purposes of testing and transportation
Work as a team with other mechanics and operators in support of Road construction and repair.
Minimum Qualifications
(Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job may be considered.)High School Diploma or GED
Formal education in Automotive repair, Diesel repair or related field
Formal training on utilization of Computer Diagnostic Systems
Three (3) or more years of experience as a Mechanic

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Washington State Class A, CDL.
ASE Automobile and Heavy Truck Certifications
Personal hand tools for automotive, heavy truck and construction machinery mechanical repair
Basic manual skills for steel welding and cladding
Must demonstrate proficiency and experience in light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment and diesel applications
Maintenance of current skills and additional training as needed

Additional job specific training may be issued at a later date.

Supplemental Information

This position is represented by Teamsters Local NO. 252 in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Teamsters Local No. 252, Operating Engineers Local 302 and Mason County Public Works.

Clothing Allowance: $200.00 paid annually

Sick and Vacation Leave: 96 hours of Vacation for the 1st-3rd years of employment and 96 hours of sick leave

Holidays: 12 Recognized Holidays (if an employee works on a holiday, they will be paid double time plus holiday pay) and 2 annual Floating (personal) Holidays

Pension: Employer paid; the County contributes $2.50 an hour for every hour worked.

Medical: $103.30 a month for employee and qualifying dependents, including a 3 month disability waiver and weekly time loss compensation

Dental and Vision:  Employer paid with no additional cost for qualifying dependents

Life / AD&D: Employer paid basic life and AD&D insurance

Longevity: The County provides additional monthly compensation to recognize continuous length of service beginning the 6th year of service

Reimbursement:  CDL Physical and CDL Endorsement
