Lewis County, located in the scenic heart of Southwest Washington, is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader for the position of Public Works Director. The Department
Lewis County Public Works’ primary responsibilities are the maintenance and construction of the county road network and the operation of the solid waste utility. The department has seven main divisions: Administration, Engineering Services, Traffic, Maintenance & Operations, Real Estate Services, Utilities, and Solid Waste.
The department, which oversees 1,053 miles of roads and 197 bridges, embraces an organizational culture that encourages individual responsibility and fosters teamwork. Thanks to the hard work, dedication and great pride displayed by each employee, the roads are safer and the environment is cleaner in Lewis County.
The Position
The Public Works Director guides a team of over 150 employees in addressing community needs, prioritizing infrastructure projects, and fostering continuous improvement.
The Director works under the Board of County Commissioners and reports directly to the County Manager. The Director has considerable latitude for independent judgment and decision-making and maintains full responsibility and authority for organizing, directing, and coordinating the department’s activities and operations.
The Public Works Director oversees planning, staff development, resource management, and fiscal practices, ensuring project completion in compliance with county, state and federal regulations. The Director serves as an adviser to the County Manager and Commissioners, keeping them informed on key matters and facilitating discussion on critical issues.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s Degree is preferred).
- Five (5) years of senior level administrative and managerial experience associated with public works functions, including three (3) years of extensive supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer with the Washington State Board of Registration or by the technical board of another state is preferred.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
